MUST-
KNOW
TIPS
FOR
A
SAFE
HOSPITAL
STAY
by
Sharon
Conley
MD
the
President/CEO
of
AVANCEN
is
available
as
an
ebooklet.
This
booklet
effectively
describes
how
to
safeguard
the
hospital
stay
for
yourself
or
family
and
friends
because
it
is
written
from
the
physician’s
experience
of
known
pitfalls
to
avoid.
Authored
in
a
terse
no
nonsense
manner,
all
the
information
is
stripped
down
to
the
“pearls”
of
knowledge
needed
to
interact
with
your
physician,
consultants
and
the
dizzying
myriad
of
staff
and
services
one
encounters
during
a
hospital
stay.

MEDICATION
DELIVERY
BY
NURSING
Nurses
administer
more
than
95%
of
your
medications
in
the
hospital.
As
part
of
their
training
they
affirm
the
5
rights
of
medication
delivery
with
each
dose.
These
rights
are:
the
right
medication
to
the
right
patient,
at
the
right
dose,
at
the
right
time,
using
the
right
method
ordered
(
for
example
oral
or
intravenous).
You
may
get
your
medications
from
a
different
nurse
than
your
assigned
nurse
for
the
day
so
don’t
assume
the
new
nurse
knows
you.
Some
hospitals
are
using
digital
bedside
scanners
to
confirm
that
the
proper
medication
is
being
given
to
the
right
patient.
Medication
mistakes
are
among
the
most
common
mistakes
made
in
the
hospital.
